  4. BBEdit Lite is a freeware derivative of BBEdit 3.0, the popular and
  5. critically acclaimed text editor for programmers, on-line-service
  6. users, and anyone else who needs to edit plain-text files.
  7.  
  8. BBEdit Lite is shipped with a QuickStart document which describes many
  9. of the application╒s features. Full documentation, as well as a
  10. considerable amount of additional functionality, is available with the
  11. purchase of BBEdit 3.0. See the document ╥BBEdit General Information╙

  17. BBEdit Lite offers the following useful functionality:
  18.  
  19. Ñ    Stationery documents. You can create a stationery document with
  20. BBEdit; whenever you open that document with BBEdit, its contents,
  21. format information, and window position will be used to create a new
  22. untitled window. You can also create a ╥global╙ stationery document
  23. which will be used as a template for all new windows.
  24.  
  25. Ñ    Open Several. This variation on the standard ╥Open╔╙ command enables
  26. you to open multiple files at once from multiple locations in the file
  27. system. You can also specify aliases to files, and those aliases will
  28. be resolved all at once.
  29.  
  30. Ñ    Powerful multi-file search. BBEdit offers the usual multi-file
  31. search, in which a disk directory is scanned and the files are opened
  32. one at a time; however, BBEdit can also display the search results in a
  33. window for easy browsing (and selected entries in the window can be
  34. opened for display). The search can also be limited to files that are
  35. already opened for editing in BBEdit, or to files which were already
  36. found in a previous multi-file search. BBEdit also offers multi-file
  37. replace capability for automated ╥search and destroy╙ operations.

  39. Ñ    Zero cost. BBEdit Lite is free, with no qualification. It╒s not
  40. shareware, and it╒s not commercial. It╒s not crippled, nor is it
  41. a demo.

  43. BBEdit Lite also offers the following :

  45. Ñ    High quality. BBEdit Lite is based on mature and stable technology;
  46. this technology is the benificiary of years of in-house and field use
  47. and testing. The commitment to quality and functionality shown in
  48. BBEdit 3.0 is reflected in BBEdit Lite.

  50. Ñ    File size limited only by available memory. BBEdit Lite╒s default
  51. partition size is 640K of RAM. This can be set as low as 450K, to make
  52. BBEdit Lite the ideal constantly-resident editor for small to moderate
  53. tasks, or turned up as high as necessary to edit many large files or
  54. perform large-scale search-and-replace operations. If you╒re running
  55. under System 7.0, BBEdit Lite automatically takes advantage of
  56. available system memory, so that you don╒t have to adjust its partition
  57. size to edit large files.

  59. Ñ    No hard limit on number of files open. The number of files that
  60. BBEdit Lite can have open at once is limited by available memory, and
  61. can be increased or decreased by adjusting  BBEdit Lite╒s partition
  62. size as appropriate.

  64. Ñ    Easy manipulation of multiple files at once. The ╥Open Several╔╙
  65. command makes it possible to open multiple files from different folders
  66. at once, and the Save and Print commands can operate on all open files
  67. at once.

  69. Ñ    Pattern (╥grep╙) searching. Matching patterns can be constructed so
  70. that strings other than exact literal matches can be found and
  71. replaced; for example, converting Pascal comments to C comments, or
  72. converting C++ comments to C comments.

  74. Ñ    System 7 awareness. Besides supporting all of the basic System 7
  75. functionality such as 32-bit mode, virtual memory, and the like, BBEdit
  76. also takes advantage of specific System 7 functionality wherever
  77. possible in order to either improve performance or to improve its
  78. appearance. This is done without sacrificing System 6 compatibility.

  82. The document ╥BBEdit Lite Quickstart╙ contains specific information on
  83. how to take advantage of BBEdit Lite╒s capabilities. If you would like
  84. to write BBEdit extensions, send a request to the address below. If you
  85. are sending your request via U.S. Mail, include a floppy disk and
  86. return postage. The reply package will include documentation on how to
  87. write your own extensions, and sample source code. The extension
  88. developer╒s kit is also available for anonymous FTP from world.std.com,
  89. in /ftp/pub/bbedit, and from mirrors of sumex.stanford.edu,
  90. in /info-mac/text.

  92. BBEdit Lite has many of the same capabilities as the commercial BBEdit;
  93. however, the following functionality is -not- present in BBEdit Lite:

  95.     -    Although it is compatible with the Power Macintosh, BBEdit
  96.         Lite contains no native PowerPC code. (Power Macintosh users
  97.         will notice some performance benefits, which are the result
  98.         of portions of the Toolbox running as native PowerPC code.)
  99.         
  100.     -    AOCE is not supported;
  101.     
  102.     -    BBEdit Lite is not scriptable;
  103.     
  104.     -    Macintosh Drag and Drop support is not included;
  105.     
  106.     -    Find Differences (comparing files, folders, and projects) is
  107.         not included;
  108.         
  109.     -    you cannot split windows;
  110.     
  111.     -    disk browsers are not included, and you can only have one Search
  112.         Results window open at a time;
  113.         
  114.     -    Marker support is not provided;
  115.     
  116.     -    PopupFuncs¬ technology is not included (you can, however, purchase
  117.         and install the PopupFuncs product into BBEdit Lite);
  118.         
  119.     -    Markers are not supported;
  120.     
  121.     -    BBEdit Lite does not know about project documents;
  122.     
  123.     -    XTND translation is not supported;
  124.     
  125.     -    Integration with THINK C/Symantec C++ and THINK Reference is not
  126.         supported;
  127.         
  128.     -    The Glossary is not supported;
  129.     
  130.     -    ToolServer is not supported;

  132.     -    BBEdit Lite cannot use extensions which are written specifically
  133.         for use on PowerPC Macs, nor can it use ╘fat╒ extensions (which
  134.         contain both 68K and PowerPC code) written to the BBEdit 3.0

  202. known as ╥freeware╙. There is no registration process, no fee requested
  203. or required, no obligation on your part, and no guilt.

  205. We at Bare Bones Software do not subscribe to the concept of
  206. ╥shareware╙; it has been our direct experience that many people simply
  207. ignore shareware notices. The cost of goods related to distributing
  208. BBEdit Lite is very low, and can be recouped by means other than
  209. (unsuccessfully) trying to shame users into paying some small amount of
  210. money for a program.

  213. obtain a piece of software, they should expect, and receive, significant
